Nicolas Thomas Baudin
né le 17 février 1754 à Saint-Martin-de-Ré (Île de Ré) et mort le 16 septembre 1803 à l'Île Maurice est un marin, capitaine, cartographe et explorateur français.
L'expédition Baudin est un voyage d'exploration scientifique français parti du Havre le 19 octobre 1800 et qui conduisit Nicolas Baudin et l'équipage du Géographe et du Naturaliste dans les mers du Sud au-delà du cap de Bonne-Espérance et jusque dans l'océan Pacifique. Marquée par une rencontre avec le Britannique Matthew Flinders au large de l'Australie, ce qui indiqua aux Européens que l'île était un continent d'un seul tenant, elle coûta la vie à de nombreux hommes, et notamment au commandant lui-même, qui mourut de la tuberculose en 1803 à l'île de France (aujourd'hui île Maurice). Cependant, elle permit aux nombreux savants qui y prirent part de réaliser les premières descriptions véritablement scientifiques d'un grand nombre de territoires austraux et de populations indigènes, du Piton de la Fournaise aux aborigènes australiens.

The Baudin expedition was a French scientific voyage of exploration that left Le Havre on 19 October 1800 and led Nicolas Baudin and the crew of the Géographe and the Naturaliste in the South Seas beyond the Cape of Good Hope and into the Pacific Ocean. Marked by a meeting with the British Matthew Flinders off the coast of Australia, which indicated to the Europeans that the island was a continent in one piece, it cost the lives of many men, including the commander himselfsame, who died of tuberculosis in 1803 on the Île de France (now Mauritius). However, it allowed the many scientists who took part to make the first truly scientific descriptions of a large number of southern territories and indigenous populations, from the Piton de la Fournaise to the Australian aborigines.
