René Coty
né le 20 mars 1882 au Havre, mort le 22 novembre 1962 au Havre, était un homme d'État français, dont la carrière culmina avec son élection à la présidence de la République française en 1954.
Vice-président du Conseil de la République en 1948, il approchait de ses soixante-douze ans à la fin de 1953 et on ne pensait guère à lui pour succéder à l'Élysée à Vincent Auriol. Mais, pour la première fois, alors que jusque là le président de la République était rapidement élu, les scrutins s'éternisèrent. Au treizième tour, le 23 décembre 1953, René Coty fut largement élu pour entrer en fonction le 16 janvier 1954.
Dans les attributions étroites que la Constitution lui donnait, il se conduisit avec finesse et dignité, devenant vite très populaire dans le coeur des Français.
En mai 1958, René Coty fait appel « au plus illustre des Français ». Il confie au général de Gaulle la tâche de constituer un gouvernement. La Constitution de la Cinquième République est promulguée le 4 octobre et il transmet ses pouvoirs au général le 8 janvier 1959 en déclarant « le premier des Français est désormais le premier en France ». Il désapprouvera cependant le recours au référendum pour décider de l'élection présidentielle au suffrage universel

René Coty
born 20 March 1882 in Le Havre, died 22 November 1962 in Le Havre, was a French statesman whose career culminated with his election to the presidency of the French Republic in 1954.
Vice president of the Council of the Republic in 1948, he was approaching his seventy-two years at the end of 1953 and there was little thought of him as successor to Vincent Auriol in the Élysée. But for the first time, while until then the president of the Republic was quickly elected, the elections were prolonged. In the thirteenth round, on 23 December 1953, René Coty was elected by a large majority to take office on 16 January 1954.
In the narrow attributions that the Constitution gave him, he behaved with finesse and dignity, quickly becoming very popular in the hearts of the French.
In May 1958, René Coty appealed to «the most illustrious of the French». He entrusts the task of forming a government to General de Gaulle. The Constitution of the Fifth Republic is promulgated on 4 October and he transfers his powers to the general on 8 January 1959 by declaring «the first of the French is now the first in France». He disapproves, however, of the use of a referendum to decide on the presidential election by universal suffrage
