Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin
né à Blois le 7 décembre 1805 et mort à Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt le 13 juin 1871, est le plus célèbre illusionniste français du XIXe siècle. Il est le fondateur du théâtre Robert-Houdin inauguré 11, rue de Valois à Paris en 1845 et transféré 8, boulevard des Italiens en 1854. Surnommé le « père de la magie moderne », Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin est considéré comme l’un des plus grands prestidigitateurs de tous les temps.
Il a utilisé ses connaissances scientifiques pour réaliser des trucages et est à l’origine de presque tous les « grands trucs » de la magie actuelle. Autodidacte, il est également un grand constructeur d’automates. Il a commencé sa carrière en tant qu’horloger, mais sa passion pour la mécanique l’a conduit à la prestidigitation. Il a découvert la prestidigitation par hasard lorsqu’un bouquiniste lui a remis par erreur le Dictionnaire Encyclopédique des Amusements et des Sciences au lieu d’un traité d’horlogerie.
Parmi ses inventions notables, on compte le « réveil briquet » qui éclaire la chambre au réveil sans aucune intervention humaine ou encore la Pendule mystérieuse, entièrement transparente pour ne pas voir le mécanisme qui permet de faire bouger les aiguilles. Ces inventions ont permis à Robert-Houdin de faire fortune et de développer ses géniales inventions magiques.

He is the founder of the Robert-Houdin theatre, inaugurated at 11 rue de Valois in Paris in 1845 and transferred to 8 boulevard des Italiens in 1854. Nicknamed the «father of modern magic», Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin is considered one of the greatest conjurers of all time.
He used his scientific knowledge to make tricks and is behind almost all the «great tricks» of modern magic. Self-taught, he is also a major automata manufacturer. He started his career as a watchmaker, but his passion for mechanics led him to the magic. He discovered the magic by chance when a bookseller gave him by mistake the Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Fun and Science instead of a treatise on clock industry.
Among his notable inventions, we can count the «lighter alarm clock» that lights the room on waking without any human intervention or the mysterious Pendulum, completely transparent so as not to see the mechanism that makes it possible to move the needles. These inventions allowed Robert-Houdin to make a fortune and develop his brilliant magical inventions.
