Le viaduc de Garabit
enjambe la vallée profonde de la Truyère sur 550 mètres, ce qui en faisait à son époque le plus long au monde.
Gustave Eiffel a construit en 4 ans et 10 mois un viaduc ferroviaire de 564 m à 122,5 m de hauteur, le plus impressionnant jamais réalisé jusqu'alors. Construit pour supporter la ligne de chemin de fer de Marvejols à Neussargues, le viaduc enjambe la vallée grâce à un arc métallique conçu par Gustave Eiffel. C'est un ouvrage incroyable, construit par porte-à-faux successifs, capable de résister au poids des trains, aux poussées du vent et aux dilatations (10 cm entre l'hiver et l'été) dues aux changements de température.
Terrassement et maçonnerie débutèrent en janvier 1880, et la première pile métallique fut montée en août 1882. L'arc métallique fut achevé le 24 juin 1883. Le clavage de l'extrados, mise en place des clés fixant les demi-arcs l'un à l'autre, eut lieu le 26 avril 1884, date du couronnement de l'ouvrage géant.

The Garabit viaduct
spans the deep valley of the Truyère for 550 metres, which was at the time the longest in the world.
Gustave Eiffel built in 4 years and 10 months a railway viaduct of 564 m to 122.5 m high, the most impressive ever made so far. Built to support the railway line from Marvejols to Neussargues, the viaduct crosses the valley thanks to a metal arch designed by Gustave Eiffel. It is an incredible structure, built by successive cantilevers, able to withstand the weight of trains, the wind and the dilatations (10 cm between winter and summer) due to temperature changes.
Earthwork and masonry began in January 1880, and the first metal pile was assembled in August 1882. The metal arch was completed on 24 June 1883. The clavage of the extrados, installation of the keys fixing the half-arcs to each other, took place on April 26, 1884, the date of the crowning of the giant work.
