Marianne de Gandon

The Marianne de Gandon is a series of common-use French stamps, designed by Pierre Gandon and engraved by Henri Cortot in typography and by Gandon in relief. The first securities were issued in early 1945 and the last value was withdrawn from sale in 1955.
At the Liberation, General de Gaulle chose the Marianne of the artist Pierre Gandon among the projects of three artists: Henry Cheffer, Charles Mazelin and Pierre Gandon. The leader of Free France wanted stamps created and printed by the French authorities, and to avoid the only presence in France of stamps printed in the USA (Arc de triomphe) or the UK (Marianne de Dulac). It’s a Marianne with an energetic head-lift
Unable to get a professional model, Gandon asked his wife Raymonde to pose and also used a photo to make his model.
