Jean Vilar
Fils de petits commerçants, Jean Vilar est né à Sète (Hérault) le 25 mars 1912. Après une initiation à la littérature et à la musique et l'obtention du baccalauréat de philosophie, il « monte » à Paris en 1932. Comédien, metteur en scène, cofondateur du festival d'Avignon en 1947 puis maître d'œuvre du Théâtre national populaire (T.N.P.) de 1951 à 1963, Jean Vilar est l'une des grandes figures françaises du théâtre du xxe siècle. Associant ses convictions morales, civiques et politiques à des choix esthétiques rigoureux, il impose un théâtre de qualité ouvert sur la société et l'histoire, qui se veut accessible au plus grand nombre.

Jean Vilar
The son of small traders, Jean Vilar was born in Sète (Hérault) on 25 March 1912. After an initiation into literature and music and the baccalaureate of philosophy, he «goes up» in Paris in 1932. Actor, director, co-founder of the Avignon festival in 1947 and then master builder of the Théâtre national populaire (T.N.P.) from 1951 to 1963, Jean Vilar is one of the great French figures of the theatre of the twentieth century. Combining his moral, civic and political convictions with rigorous aesthetic choices, he imposes a quality theatre open to society and history, which is intended to be accessible to the greatest number.
