Abraham Gerardus van Velde, dit Bram van Velde
né le 19 octobre 1895 à Zoeterwoude, près de Leyde, mort le 28 décembre 1981 à Grimaud, est un peintre et lithographe néerlandais.
C'est en 1939 que l'artiste créé son propre langage plastique, avec la première de trois grandes gouaches qui fonderont les caractéristiques de son art. Il arrête de peindre en 1941 (il n'a « plus la force de poursuivre (son) oeuvre », selon ce qu'il écrira vers 1945 à un collectionneur néerlandais), pour ne reprendre que vers l'automne 1945. Sa première exposition personnelle ouvre le 21 mars 1946 à Paris à la Galerie Mai de Marcel Michaud avec vingt cinq peintures, la quasi-totalité de son oeuvre.

In 1939, the artist created his own plastic language, with the first of three great gouaches that will fuse the characteristics of his art. He stopped painting in 1941 (he has «no more the strength to continue (his) work», according to what he wrote around 1945 to a Dutch collector), only to resume towards the autumn of 1945. His first solo exhibition opens on 21 March 1946 in Paris at the Galerie Mai by Marcel Michaud with twenty-five paintings, almost all of his work.
