Joan Miró
né Joan Miró i Ferrà à Barcelone le 20 avril 1893 et mort à Palma de Majorque le 25 décembre 1983 (à 90 ans), est un peintre, sculpteur, graveur et céramiste. De nationalité espagnole, Joan Miró se définit comme « catalan international ». C'est l'un des principaux représentants du mouvement surréaliste.
Son oeuvre reflète son attrait pour le subconscient, pour « l'esprit enfantin », et pour son pays. À ses débuts, il montre de fortes influences fauvistes, cubistes et expressionnistes, avant d'évoluer dans de la peinture plane avec un certain côté naïf. Le tableau intitulé La Ferme, peint en 1920, est l'une des toiles les plus connues de cette époque.
À partir de son départ pour Paris, son oeuvre devient plus onirique, ce qui correspond aux grandes lignes du mouvement surréaliste auquel il adhère. Dans de nombreux entretiens et écrits des années 1930, Miró manifeste son désir d'abandonner les méthodes conventionnelles de la peinture. Il ne veut se plier à aucune exigence, ni à celles de l'esthétique et de ses méthodes, ni à celles du surréalisme.
En son honneur a été fondée à Barcelone la « Fondation Joan-Miró », en 1975. C'est un centre culturel et artistique dévolu à la présentation des nouvelles tendances de l'art contemporain. Elle est initialement alimentée par un important fonds offert par le maître.

born Joan Miró i Ferrà in Barcelona on 20 April 1893 and died in Palma de Mallorca on 25 December 1983 (aged 90), is a painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramist. Joan Miró, a Spanish national, defines himself as an «international Catalan». He is one of the leading figures in the surrealist movement.
His work reflects his attraction to the subconscious, to the «childish spirit» and to his country. In his early days, he showed strong Fausta, cubist and expressionist influences, before evolving into plane painting with a certain naïve side. The painting entitled La Ferme, painted in 1920, is one of the best known paintings of this period.
From his departure for Paris, his work becomes more dreamlike, which corresponds to the main lines of the surrealist movement to which he adheres. In numerous interviews and writings of the 1930s, Miró expressed his desire to abandon conventional methods of painting. He does not want to comply with any requirements, neither those of the aesthetics and its methods, nor those of surrealism.
In his honour, the «Joan-Miró Foundation» was founded in Barcelona in 1975. It is a cultural and artistic centre dedicated to the presentation of new trends in contemporary art. It is initially funded by a large fund offered by the master.
