Joseph Ernest Renan

was born on 28 February 1823 in Tréguier, a brilliant student who is now seeking the priesthood. At 15, he entered the seminary of Saint Nicolas du Chardonnet in Paris. At 18, at the seminary of Issy les Moulineaux, he studied philosophy. At 20, at the Séminaire Saint Sulpice in Paris, he studied Hebrew and received the tonsure. At 21, he received minor orders.
In 1845, Renan is 22 years old and leaves the church. He loses faith in God and believes in the future of science. He wishes to devote his life to the study of the origins of Christianity with a scientific approach. He will tell the story of this conversion in his Souvenirs d'enfance et de jeunesse.
In 1848, he was awarded first at the agrégation of philosophy. In that year, King Louis-Philippe was forced to abdicate and the Republic was proclaimed. Renan voted for Lamartine in the presidential elections. He wrote The Future of Science (which was not published until 1890).
In 1862, Renan was appointed to the Collège de France: his opening course presents Jesus as an incomparable man: he is therefore not the son of God. Scandal: the Catholic clergy demands and obtains suspension of the course and its revocation.
In 1863, he published the Life of Jesus, the first of seven volumes of the History of the origins of Christianity.
In 1871, the Third Republic reintegrates him into the Collège de France, of which he is an administrator. He died there on 2 October 1892, he is buried in the cemetery of Montmartre in Paris.
