The cathedral of Narbonne

is located in the heart of the present city, however in the Middle Ages it was on the edge of the ramparts. This site is the result of a long, settling of places of worship. Approximately on the same site there was a Constantinian Basilica, erected shortly after the edict of 313 authorizing Christian worship. Destroyed by fire in 441, it took 37 days to demolish what the fire had saved. Then a Latin basilica built in 4 years by the bishop Rustique, which the prefect of the Gauls, Marcellus, encouraged in his enterprise. The Basilica was completed on 29 November 445. Originally dedicated to St Genés d'Arles, it was consecrated in 782 to the young Spanish martyrs Just and Pasteur. A pre-Romanian Carolingian cathedral rebuilt in 890 by the archbishop Theodard, who died on 1 May 893. The bell tower, largely restored, visible from the cloister remains. Despite the help provided by 3 popes, this church fell into ruin. The construction of the Gothic cathedral was a political act decided in 1268 by Pope Clement IV, former archbishop of Narbonne. It will be, he says, a work made like the magnificent cathedrals of the Kingdom of France. The first stone of the current church was laid by Archbishop Maurin on 13 April 1272, in the foundations of the present Sacred Heart chapel. The construction of the cathedral of St Just and St Pasteur was planned as early as 1264 but did not begin until 1272, and the choir was completed in 1332.
