Alphonse Juin

né le 16 décembre 1888 à Bône (département de Constantine) et mort le 27 janvier 1967 à Paris, est un général d'armée élevé à la dignité de maréchal de France.
Quand éclata la Première Guerre mondiale il participa aux combats avec les Tabors marocains. Blessé en 1915, il perdit l'usage de son bras droit.
Il gravit tous les échelons de la hiérarchie militaire, fut promu en 1938, général de l'armée d'Afrique. En 1939, au moment de la déclaration de guerre, il fut nommé commandant de la 15e division d'infanterie motorisée. Il couvrit la retraite de Dunkerque en mai...lire la suite

 

Alphonse Juin

was born on 16 December 1888 in Bône (Constantine department) and died on 27 January 1967 in Paris, was an army general who was raised to the rank of Marshal of France.
When World War I broke out he fought with the Moroccan Tabors. Wounded in 1915, he lost the use of his right arm.
He climbed all the ranks of the military hierarchy, was promoted in 1938 to general of the army of Africa. In 1939, at the time of the declaration of war, he was appointed commander of the 15th Motorized Infantry Division. He covered the retreat from Dunkirk in May 1940, fought a desperate battle, but was taken prisoner on 19 May. Released at the request of Vichy in June 1941, he was sent to succeed Weygand as commander-in-chief of the forces in North Africa. Having joined the Americans in November 1942, he took over the leadership of the French contingent which stopped the Axis force in Tunisia. Called by de Gaulle to head the French expeditionary force in Italy. His corps was then assigned to the landing of Provence.
Chief of the General Staff of the National Defence from 1945 to 1947. Later appointed Inspector-General of the Armed Forces, he simultaneously (1951-1956) served as the inter-allied commander of the NATO Central European Sector Ground Forces.
Raised to the rank of Marshal of France in 1952, Alphonse Juin was hostile to the Algerian policy of General de Gaulle, but nevertheless refused to support the coup of the generals.
